History
Operación San Andrés fulfills the “vision” of cardiologist Luis A. Campos and his wife, Ruth. Dr. Campos’ medical practice in Houston, Texas, USA has spanned more than 30 years. While a high-school student at San Andres school in Lima, Dr. Campos recognized the plight of impoverished people living near Lima, Peru and made the following plea:
“Give them Hope! Hope in Him who is the maker of the universe but ‘had no place in this world to lay His head.’
He knows all about poverty …….”
OSA’s first mission trip to Peru occurred in 2003 with approximately 16 participants including doctors, dentists, nurses, and other volunteers. Since then, OSA mission trips have experienced significant growth. The trip in October, 2006 had approximately 50 participants including doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, optometrist, pharmacists, and pastors. Lay volunteers conducted Vacation Bible School, distributed clothing, and provided support services to the medical/dental team.
In 2005, OSA-Peru purchased property in Collique, Peru. An OSA “house” has been built on this property and is the base from which the ongoing medical, educational, nutritional, and spiritual ministry takes place. In 2005, OSA was adopted as a “mission society” of South Main Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and OSA became a Texas non-profit corporation. OSA has been granted “tax exempt status” under section 501(c)(3) of the USA Internal Revenue Code.
