School classes started on Monday, March 12. This was the first day for Jacky to be in classes at her school: Colegio Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. She is 7 years old and in the first grade of elementary school. She attends this public school in the mornings.

This is an overwhelming experience for Jacky. About the only contact she’s had for more than a year has been with other children in the hospital during her frequent medical consultations, clinical exams, and surgical interventions. Even though she had very little prior socialization, she is adapting easily to the educational system, in spite of her difficulty moving around due to her shorter leg and the use of the prothesis and special shoes.

Her teacher’s name is Aurora, and she knows how to encourage Jacky. In spite being unable to attend school last year, Jacky is making good grades. The teacher says that Jacky is very interested in what the teacher is teaching.  She has an “A” for her grades.

Jacky attends the afternoon session of the educational enrichment program of Operación San Andrés. One can tell that she is very content when you see her smile and participate in the program. Jacky says, “I’m happy because I’m with my friends.”
