The Mobilizing Medical Missions (M3) Conference is held annually in Houston, Tx, USA to bring together people with a passion for serving in the remote areas of the world, where medical resources are all too scarce. OSA participated in the 2023 M3 Conference with a poster presentation presenting the results of a survey conducted in Collique: ‘A survey of Ollas Comunes in Collique, Peru: How soup kitchens are combating food insecurity in impoverished communities’. The panel of judges was impressed, and we won 2nd prize!
At the present, OSA provides non-perishable food supplies such as rice, beans, lentils, sugar, and cooking oil to approximately 60 soup kitchens scattered around Collique. These soup kitchens provide a healthy meal to about 4000 people each day. A big thanks to Grip Gilbert who, serving as an OSA intern conducted the research, to the team in Lima who facilitated the work done, and to Dr. Luis Campos for representing OSA at the M3 Conference.
